I found this essay to be almost a continuation of the Idiot Nation essay. It had more references and citations to support his opinion, but it seemed very similar. John Taylor Gatto in his essay: Against School suggests that the course outline and structure of public schools are a prison. That it rarely serves any benefit to kids and as a whole is seriously flawed. I tend to disagree with most of what this essay is about.
Citing first , that I grew up here in Utah which I know to be very different from other states. However, his first tangent about many famous people,(rich people) who never went or finished formal schooling, yet were very successful. This is true, but they are hardly the rule. to suggest that this form of success could be duplicated on a larger scale is ridiculous. Public schools may be flawed but they are certainly better than just cutting kids loose like he suggest at the end of the essay. Ya, leave them to their own genius. Isn't the structure of schools and other programs how we combat gangs? He also in his citations uses very old writings and theories. The whole time I was reading I was thinking, " is this an old essay? from like, the 20's or something?" Finally, like I stated with the Moore essay, what do you suggest we do as a solution Mr. Gatto? I would agree that flexibility is helpful in helping kids engage themselves in school, but it must be supported with parents encouraging kids to get involved, and teachers being more prepared to help learn, rather than spit out boring ineffective lessons.
